TEL HI's Beacon Summer Program at Francisco Middle School brought creativity and teamwork to life during its Second Annual Cardboard Derby (5th Annual Cardboard Madness Event) on Tuesday, July 21, 2026! |
Over four weeks, middle school students worked in teams to design and build derby cars using cardboard and other recycled materials. Through the process, they strengthened engineering, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while turning their ideas into 10 one-of-a-kind race cars that raced down Francisco Street on race day! |

The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of community members, TEL HI board members, fellow TEL HI campers from both the Beacon and ESA summer programs, and team members from the SF Beacon Initiative! District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter helped kick off the festivities before the races began. Afterwards, awards were presented recognizing standout achievements in creativity, design, and performance!

After the races, the celebration continued with food,
Ben & Jerry's ice cream, open driving of the student-built derby cars, and other fun activities. A special thank you to Street Made Car Club and City Lifestyle Car Club for bringing their classic cars and lowriders for the community to enjoy, and to Building Resources San Francisco for generously donating the lumber students used to build their derby cars. Partnerships like these help create memorable experiences that bring our community together.

TEL HI's Beacon Summer Program gives youth opportunities to explore STEM through creative, real-world projects like the Cardboard Madness Derby. Throughout the summer, students stay engaged through hands-on learning and enrichment activities that help prevent summer learning loss. Just as importantly, the program provides working families with a safe, reliable place for their children while school is out—giving parents peace of mind and young people the opportunity to learn, gain new experiences, build friendships, and have fun all summer long!

For decades, TEL HI and Recology have partnered to make a positive impact in San Francisco. Over the years, many Recology team members have served on TEL HI's Board of Directors, and this past year, Recology sponsored both our Taste of TEL HI Gala and Winter Fundraiser, helping support our programs while advancing our shared commitment to building stronger, more sustainable communities.

Their upcoming collaboration with the Petaluma Art Center, It’s Not Trash: Reclaiming and Transforming, includes work from 37 former SF AIR artists, one artist from the Portland GLEAN Program, and six Bay Area artists selected by curator Lisa Lightman. All participating artists created their work from reclaimed materials. Many are investigating ideas about place, culture, history, and family, while others are choosing materials that consider shape, form, color, and texture.

This summer with AAALI marked TEL HI’s first opportunity to support students at Mission Bay School, helping create a safe, welcoming space where young people could stay connected, build confidence, and prevent summer learning loss.

TEL HI's Choir for Aging & Older Adults |
What began with just 6 participants in May 2025 has quickly grown into one of the most popular activities in TEL HI’s Aging and Older Adult Program. Thanks to our partnership with Community Music Center (CMC), the choir now has 21 registered participants who come together each week to sing, learn, and connect. Led by a CMC instructor, choir members perform songs in Cantonese, celebrating culture while building friendships through music. The choir also includes several English-speaking participants who are learning Cantonese one song at a time!

| North Beach Place Back-to-School Supply Drive & Giveaway Event |
Help students 2026-27 school year off strong by donating to TEL HI’s back-to-school supply drive! Every donation helps provide essentials like backpacks, binders, notebooks, pencils and more for local families who need it most. Donate via TEL HI's Venmo by clicking here, searching

You can also donate new, unopened school supplies at the TEL HI North Beach lobby Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at 555 Chestnut St. |
Supplies will be distributed on Wednesday, August 12 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the North Beach Place Youth Center. Families with children in pre-K through college are welcome to attend and choose supplies for the new school year. Register here by Friday, August 7. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
