Abraham warmly welcomes three strangers into his tent and provides them with food and water.
We are excited to introduce a new initiative at JCRC-NY: the adoption of an annual theme based on a core Jewish value to guide our programming and foster unity within our diverse community. For our inaugural year, 5785 (October 2024 – September 2025), we are thrilled to announce our chosen Jewish Value of the Year: Hachnasat Orchim (הַכְנָסַת אוֹרְחִים)!
Pronounced "hakh-na-SAT or-KHEEM," this fundamental Jewish value translates to "welcoming guests" or "hospitality." Rooted in the Biblical story of Abraham's exemplary hospitality, Hachnasat Orchim is considered one of the most important mitzvot (commandments) in Judaism.
In selecting this theme for our first-ever annual focus, JCRC-NY reaffirms our commitment to fostering a more welcoming and inclusive community across New York City. Throughout the coming year, our programming and initiatives will highlight this value, aiming to:
- Build bridges between diverse communities
- Promote understanding and empathy
- Create spaces where all feel welcomed and valued
Stay tuned for exciting programs and opportunities to embrace Hachnasat Orchim throughout the year. Together, let's open our hearts and spaces to one another, inspired by the spirit of Abraham.
