Prior authorization reform takes effect Jan. 1; plus, announcing a new members-only benefit |
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, major reforms to Colorado’s prior authorization laws will go into effect under HB24-1149, bringing meaningful improvements for surgical practices, medical teams, and administrative staff. Below is a combined overview of the changes that may affect your workflow and patient care. New Protections for patients, physicians and practices
Medical Services |
- Approvals now last one year or the length of treatment.
- Carriers must identify covered alternatives when a request is denied.
- Insurers must conduct annual reviews to eliminate unnecessary prior auth requirements.
|
- Chronic medications receive three-year approvals (unless classified as high-cost).
- Formularies and criteria must be publicly posted and searchable.
|
-
When an approved surgery requires an additional or related covered procedure during the operation, insurers cannot deny coverage if delaying care would put the patient at risk.
- Carriers cannot retroactively deny payment for the approved surgery due to related intraoperative services.
|
Alternative Exemption Programs |
- Carriers must develop provider exemption programs that reduce or remove prior auth requirements for services and prescription drugs.
|
Now is a good time to review practice workflows to ensure compliance and take advantage of new exemption pathways.
For more information and detailed guidance, visit the new CMS Prior Auth Resource page (members only; login required). If you are having trouble logging in, please respond to this email or reach out to [email protected].

Colorado Chooses Vaccines pushes back on CDC changes to Autism and Vaccines webpage |
Colorado Chooses Vaccines -- of which the Colorado Medical Society is a coalition participant -- released a statement expressing deep concern by the recent changes to the CDC’s Autism and Vaccines webpage, which now promotes the false claim that vaccines cause autism. As CCV states: "This update is not based on scientific evidence. CDC career scientists did not initiate or endorse the change, and it contradicts more than three decades of research from the United States and around the world—spanning millions of children—that has consistently found the same thing: vaccines do not cause autism."
