CMS joins AMA lawsuit against MultiPlan |
Protecting physicians, lawsuit alleges health insurance companies are using Multiplan to fix out-of-network reimbursement in violation of federal law |
The Colorado Medical Society has joined a lawsuit filed by the American Medical Association (AMA) and Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) against MultiPlan claiming the data analytics agency is at the center of a price-fixing conspiracy with commercial health insurance companies that has undercut fair payment for out-of-network health care services and eliminated market competition resulting in harm to patients and physicians.
The lawsuit seeks to hold MultiPlan accountable for its role in an unlawful multilateral price-fixing scheme that has operated roughly since 2015 and has forced physicians to accept increasingly low payment amounts for out-of-network services, which often do not cover their operating costs. This widespread violation of federal antitrust laws has forced many medical practices, particularly smaller ones, to shut their doors, cease offering certain services, or seek other employment arrangements, leaving patients with fewer and fewer medical practice options.
CMS is working to negotiate favorable terms for representation for practices wishing to seek damages and compensation against MultiPlan and the largest health care payers including United, Cigna, Aetna, Anthem and BlueCross BlueShield. We will share more information soon about your rights in this case.
It is critical for the Colorado Medical Society and other physician advocates to hold MultiPlan accountable to recover lost revenue due to their misconduct, prevent others from experiencing out-of-network price fixing, and promote regulatory action. |
