Colorado health insurance rates expected to skyrocket, especially in high country and Western Slope |
The Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI) released preliminary information on the cost of private health insurance plans for 2026 for the individual market, and based on rates requested by insurers, project the state may see average premium increases of 28.4% next year, with spikes on the Western Slope and in Grand Junction of up to 38%.
The DOI reports that average statewide increases were 5.6% in 2025, 9.7% in 2024, 10.4% in 2023 and 1.1% in 2022. The agency says the core driver of the increase for 2026 is the federal government allowing the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits.
It is important to note that these numbers are not final. The Colorado insurance commissioner, Michael Conway, must approve the insurers' requested price increases, and public comment will be taken on Aug. 1. |
