Passage of H.R. 1 triggers significant changes to health care financing in Colorado |
H.R. 1, the Big Beautiful Bill Act that was signed on July 4, includes several provisions that will affect Medicaid and insurance coverage in Colorado. According to state and national estimates, Colorado could see a 16 percent reduction in federal Medicaid funding over the next decade. The law introduces new Medicaid work requirements and more frequent eligibility redeterminations, set to take effect at the end of 2026. State officials anticipate these changes may reduce coverage for up to 110,000 Coloradans and are preparing for potential impacts on staffing, systems, and budgets.
Other provisions may influence Colorado’s commercial insurance market and reinsurance program. Without Congressional action, enhanced federal premium tax credits for ACA marketplace plans are set to expire at the end of this year, which could double premiums for some consumers. Reduced premium subsidies would also lower federal funding for Colorado’s reinsurance program, which helps stabilize premiums. |

Colorado physicians successfully pass new AMA policy to support privacy and security in neurotechnologies
|
At the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association in June, the Colorado Delegation to the AMA successfully brought and passed a new policy to protect patients’ neural data. The resolution was brought forth by Lynn Parry, MD, MSc., a neurologist and member of the Colorado Delegation to the AMA, and is based on a first-in-the-nation law passed in Colorado in 2024 that was championed by Sean Pauzauskie, MD, also a neurologist, with his representative at the time, now-Sen. Cathy Kipp.
Resolution 503, “Safeguarding Neural Data Collected by Neurotechnologies,” codifies physicians’ strong support for legislative and regulatory efforts to protect neurotechnology users from potential harm. Additionally, it formalizes a specific definition of neural data as “information obtained by measuring the activity of a person’s central or peripheral nervous system through the use of neurotechnologies,” not including “data inferred from nonneural information.” Dr. Parry credits the efforts of Dr. Sean Pauzauskie and the Neurorights Foundation as instrumental to CMS's success. "It was a great privilege for the Colorado Delegation to the AMA House of Delegates to drive the adoption of this critical resolution that, with the support of the American Academy of Neurology, has now become a new policy of the American Medical Association.” |

AMA releases new report on physician practice characteristics |
A new report is available from the American Medical Association based on the AMA’s 2024 Physician Practice Benchmark Survey. This survey describes the changes in the ownership and organization of physician practices since 2012, showing that physicians deliver care to patients in practices that are increasingly owned by hospitals or other organizations and not by physicians; they are larger; and they are increasingly likely to include physicians in a variety of specialties.
The report also explores the reasons that private practices are sold to hospitals, private equity firms, or insurers and finds that inadequate payment rates, costly resources, and burdensome regulatory and administrative requirements are longstanding and important drivers of this change.
Other reports based on the Benchmark Survey can be found here. |

Final reminder: Complete a survey and influence CMS and AMA advocacy |
Colorado physicians are facing growing pressures — flat reimbursements, rising administrative burdens, and a system that’s eroding physician-patient trust. CMS and the AMA urgently request you speak up through a quick survey.
It takes less than 5 minutes and your confidential response helps power our advocacy with lawmakers and regulators. Without strong participation, we can’t effectively fight for the changes physicians desperately need.
If you haven’t taken the survey yet, please do it now. The survey closes this week. We need as many Colorado physicians to respond as possible. Once you complete the survey, please ask a colleague to do the same. Together, we can make your voice heard.
Optional: We value your time! After completing the survey, complete this form to be entered into a giveaway for a surprise gift from CMS. |
