CME requirements for licensure: What you need to know |
Colorado physicians should be aware of an important change in Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for medical license renewals. Starting with the 2027 renewal cycle, physicians will be required to complete at least 30 hours of approved AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ every two years. This new requirement, established by 2024 legislation, marks a significant shift in the state's approach to ongoing medical education.
It's crucial to note that this 30-hour CME requirement does not take effect immediately and the Colorado Medical Board has not completed work on this issue yet. The implementation is set for the 2027 renewal cycle, giving physicians ample time to prepare for this new obligation. Until then, physicians should continue to follow their current CME practices, and any existing requirements set by their specialty boards, which often exceed this upcoming state mandate. Additionally, physicians should be mindful of the separate requirement to complete two hours of substance use disorder training for each license renewal period, which is already in effect. For full details regarding medical license renewals go to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Division of Professions and Occupations website. Watch for future updates from CMS.

Include FAMLI in your after-visit summaries |
After-visit summaries are important for physicians and patients, delivering crucial next steps and other information about their health.
Now you can make those summaries even more valuable by letting your patients know about paid family and medical leave in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment - FAMLI Division encourages you to copy and paste the message below into your after-visit summaries:
Did you know that nearly all workers in Colorado now qualify for paid leave to take care of themselves or a loved one with a serious health condition? Pregnancy qualifies as a serious health condition, and both parents are eligible to take up to 12 weeks to bond with a new child. Some employers may be using a private insurance plan to offer their paid family leave coverage. Talk to your employer and find out more at famli.colorado.gov.
The Division also encourages you to print out our “What-Is-FAMLI” flyers in both English and Spanish. These flyers are a great introduction to FAMLI and will point your patients in the right direction to learn more. |
